Understanding the interaction of metals with oxygen
A strip of magnesium - Tester filled with oxygen- litmus- A glass of water- holder
Apply the tester filled with oxygen in the middle of the desk
Heat the magnesium bar until It glows
Then put it in the cylinder filled with oxygen
Now add to the tester an amount of water with shaking and notice what happens
We notice the increase in the glow of the magnesium strip and its transformation into a white powder
We notice that the powder is dissolved in the water
We notice the blue coloration of the solution
We can deduct from this the interaction of metals such as magnesium with oxygen, forming metal oxides known as basic oxides.
