an experience Static friction and sliding friction

the goal:


Calculating the coefficient of static friction and the coefficient of kinetic friction, comparing static and kinetic friction, describing the effect of weight on friction force, and identifying the effect of surface area on friction.


Materials and tools:

Hook (clamp) - set of blocks - Newton spring scale - piece of wood


Steps:

1- Attach the loop to the piece of wood and weigh the piece of wood using the spring balance.


2- Find the force required to move the piece of wood from rest.


3- Repeat the above steps by placing different weights on the piece of wood and record the results each time.


4- Calculate the coefficient of static friction using the following equation:

Coefficient of static friction = Force of static friction ÷ Weight


5- Calculate the coefficient of sliding friction using the following equation:

Coefficient of sliding friction = Force of sliding friction ÷ Weight


Note:

We observe the impact of weight force on the friction force.


Conclusion:

When an object is at rest, it is necessary to overcome friction to make it move. However, if the object is sliding over another object, there is sliding friction between them.
