Exploring how mammals keep their bodies warm in cold places.
Vegetable fat - Ice - Kitchen brush - Stopwatch.
Lower the lab assistant's hand into the ice and note the stopwatch time.
Note how long the lab assistant can tolerate the cold before raising their hand.
Use the kitchen brush to apply vegetable fat to the lab assistant's hand and repeat lowering the hand into the ice.
Note how long the lab assistant can tolerate the cold before raising their hand again.
We observe that the lab assistant was able to tolerate the ice for a longer period of time with the vegetable fat applied than without it.
We conclude that mammals use fat to keep their bodies warm in cold external temperatures.
